Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries

The Alma VanDusen Fund, held at the Vancouver Foundation, provides bursaries that assist full-time, female students in financial need who have identified academic or vocational education goals and demonstrated their ability to reach them. The amount of bursaries and their value vary from year-to-year.

The Vancouver Foundation is dedicated to creating healthy, vibrant and livable communities in BC and across Canada. Together with donors, they have been making meaningful and lasting impacts on communities for 76 years.

This $500 award is provided by the Academic Worker's Union. The award recipient will be an International student nominated by a union member; no application is required.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student completing first year sciences at the Prince Rupert campus. This award has been established as an endowment by the Academic Worker's Union to provide a lasting memorial to John Hiom’s commitment and dedication to quality science education. Selection will be by Academic Worker's Union faculty nomination; no application is required. The recipient must be eligible to enrol in a full-time science program at a post-secondary institution.

The John Jensen Award of $500 is given annually to a politically active student of Coast Mountain College. The award is provided by the Academic Worker's Union and will go to a student nominated by a union member; no application is required.

Patti Barnes was a community activist who dedicated 28 years to the College, Library, students, and the Academic Worker's Union (AWU). Over the years, Patti was always known for her help to others. She was kind-hearted and positively influenced and changed the lives of many people. Patti was a friend to many and dedicated herself to community organizations and to improving the world. Patti’s spirit of helping people will carry on with this award. 

The award is provided by the Academic Worker's Union and will go to a student nominated by a union member; no application is required. The award consists of two parts: a $1,000 cheque from the AWU, and a $1,000 tuition credit to be used at Coast Mountain College (CMTN) for a student intending to enrol in their second year of studies in an CMTN academic program. 

This award is intended to apply to a student engaged in, and committed to, community and/or international work empowering under-represented groups. For example, but not limited to: working in literacy, women’s issues, human rights, student advocacy, labour, First Nations, poverty, and multiculturalism.

Rhena Gardiner was an Early Childhood Education faculty member who passed away several years ago. In her memory, the Academic Worker's Union (AWU) presents a $500 award to a student who demonstrates maturity and commitment to their studies, and who has a particular interest in supporting children with special needs. The recipient will be nominated by a union member; no application is required.

Coast Mountain College (CMTN) and the CMTN Foundation are pleased to offer 32 one-time $1,500 Bachelor of Nursing Entrance Awards.  One award will be given to each first year student that registers and remains past the stable enrolment date of September 20, 2023.  This award is being funded by CMTN college employees who give towards health science awards for the purpose of recruiting and retaining health care students in the region.

Thanks to generous donations from BC Hydro to the Coast Mountain College Endowment Fund, a $500 award is available annually to a student enrolled in the University Credit program who leads a balanced lifestyle and is knowledgeable and committed to the efficient and safe use of electricity and protection of the environment. Preference will be given to a female or Indigenous student.

BC Transit is one of the most robust and complex public transportation services in British Columbia. Serving every part of BC except the lower mainland, this provincial crown corporation oversees a fleet of 1,200-plus vehicles in 83 transit systems, serving 51 million riders annually. More than 130 communities depend on BC Transit to meet their unique transportation needs.

In 2021, driven by the commitment to becoming an even more diverse and inclusive employer, BC Transit started its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion journey. As part of this journey, BC Transit has identified reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and communities as a priority. The BC Transit Indigenous Bursary aims to create more opportunities for Indigenous students and support them to have a positive impact on their communities.
